Do You Have A Social Media Routine?

Everyone’s favorite voiceover blogger, and my good friend, Dave Courvoisier, penned an article yesterday about the NEED of voice actors to be present on social media. Drawing The Line. Dave also noted that there are many successful voice actors who are NOT as present on social media as others. The key, according to Dave, is to find the right balance for you, and use your time judiciously. I agree.

That said, I began to evaluate my presence on social media and the ROI, and will make my findings the subject of a future article. I have started my analysis by taking a look at what I consider to be a judicious use of my time on social media, and other sites, that I feel benefit me as a voice talent and blogger in today’s digital world.

Depending on my schedule for the day, here is what I strive to make my social media routine:

  • Check P2P sites for private auditions/inbox messages
  • Check email from clients
  • Check blog comments/analytics
  • Check Voiceover Facebook groups for VO News/Interests
  • Check LinkedIn for messages/invitations
  • Check Twitter for messages/mentions

This is the routine that currently works for me. Of course, with the ebb and flow of social media and other sites, additions and deletions will occur.

What works for you? Please share your social media routine, if you have one, or at least your favorite stops on the ever-expanding world wide web.

…and as you can probably see, responding to your blog (any blog) is a first for me.

    May your hours be well-spent.

Thanks for posting this Derek and I’m grateful for the comments as well. Working in VO and relying on being at the computer for most of my working (and non-working) day, I’m keenly aware of the tight rope-walking we need to do as artists and entrepreneurs. How to balance the “necessary evil and time suck of social media” versus the communiques from clients, audition notices and submissions and marketing, is a constant struggle for me, I freely admit it.

So I appreciate the fact that this isn’t a “Lone Ranger” type of situation and I’m happy to learn any and all viable short-cuts from the pros that will work for me as well. Right now, it’s me and my laptop, no smart phone in tow, just yet, nor iPad for that matter.

Email, p2p sites, LinkedIn and Twitter as often as I can. FB has gone by the wayside for the most part, tho’ I check up on my FB groups to stay in the loop, I’m not posting the way I used to, but I agree, it is an ebb and flow kind of thing.

For better or worse (probably the latter) unless something grabs my attention, I put group discussions and some blogs on hold…

Thanks again, for being there, happy to hear from you. Gettin’ back to work now.

If I’m not careful I can unintentionally lose a lot of time to social media. So I’m always working on ways to maximize the benefits of it, without sacrificing valuable time.

One way I’ve done that is with Flipboard for my iPad. I have my RSS feed, Facebook feed, Twitter feed and the Twitter lists I like to follow all set up in Flipboard. That allows me to scroll through all the content daily in one easy place. Between auditions, or when I have a few minutes, I open the app and do some reading.

Hey Ralph. No question I ‘m ready for basketball season. It’s a great night for me…the Lakers and Jayhawks both start their seasons tonight!!

The marketing and advertising are somewhat separate, but at the same time, while I’m checking these sources, I’m always looking for a way to market/advertise as well. Some of that has to happen on the fly.

I’ll look forward to your email.

    Hi Derek,
Where is your sports in there?:)
I am looking forward to the NBA season launching tonight and I know we’ll both be cheering for the LA Lakers!

Just wondering where does your marketing/advertising fit in with your Social Media Routine? Or is that a separate discussion? For me, social media has it’s ups and downs – just like life I guess…I will send you an email with an example of each from the last week as I don’t want to share it with the whole world.

    Best,
    Ralph
