You’re Going To Do What? From Where?

“You’re going to do what? From where? That’s ridiculous!”

-Response from the family of daredevil, Felix Baumgartner, when he told them he was going to parachute to earth from the edge of space, 24 miles high.

“You’re going to do what? From where? That’s ridiculous!”

-Response from your family when you told them you’re going to turn the walk-in closet into a recording studio and do voiceovers for a living.

At the point you decided to pursue your passion as a voiceover artist, you had to feel a bit like Felix Baumgartner did on Sunday, when he climbed out of that capsule 24 miles above the earth and stepped onto that small platform knowing that he was literally taking THE ‘leap-of-faith’ of a lifetime.

To complete his amazing feat, Baumgartner had to prepare, practice, pay attention to detail,  surround himself with an incredible support staff, have no fear, believe in himself, and have nerves of steel. Doing so allowed him to make his successful leap into the record books, and miraculously land safely on his feet.

CAUTION: ANALOGY COMING

To complete your amazing feat of supporting yourself and your family as a voiceover artist, you have to (amongst other things), prepare, practice, pay attention to detail, surround yourself with an incredible support staff, have no fear, believe in yourself, and have nerves of steel.

Here’s to you, your dreams, and landing safely on your feet!

I’ve done voice over on the side since 1995. When I was downsized from my last radio job in January of this year, I suppose I did feel like I was just hurled out of a balloon 24 miles above earth! But all the years of VO on the side leading up to this point have been the difference maker in now doing it full time. Thus far… I have not plummeted to earth with a horrific splat. Here’s hoping it stays that way. :)

Great post Derek. Love the connection.

    Joyce,

It’s an honor to know you’re reading my blog. Thank you for the comment. I like your analogy about a voiceover degree. In my day job as an attorney I am required to attend continuing legal education classes each year to stay informed about changes in the law and the practice of law. It is very similar in VO. One Must stay up to date and informed.

Great analogy! Another way of looking at preparing for a career in this field is to see it as getting a Voiceover Degree. The preparation and dedication to your craft is an ongoing education…ever learning, growing, and honing.
